Job 8-10
“FRIEND” #2
BILDAD THE SHUHITE
Bildad’s Bad Sermon Idea
Look up Job! The character of God (8:3-7)
God does not pervert justice
God punishes sin
God restores the pure
God blesses the humble
Look back Job! The wisdom of the past (8:8-10)
We aren’t very smart
We don’t live very long
Look around Job! The evidence of nature (8:11-19)
Plants die without water
A spider’s web is not sturdy
Without deep roots, life withers
Conclusion (8:20-22)
Bildad’s Five Key Assumptions (8:1-22)
Your children died because of sin (4)
You aren’t looking to God (5)
You aren’t pure and upright (6)
You have forgotten God and are godless (13)
You are not blameless, you’re an evildoer (20)
* How do these assumptions compare with what we read about Job in chapters 1-2?
Job’s Five Key Questions (9:1-24)
How can a mortal be righteous before God? (2)
Who has resisted Him and come out unscathed? (4)
How can I find words to argue with Him? (14)
If it is a matter of justice, who will summon Him? (19)
If it is not He, then who is it? (24)
Job’s Sermon Without a Conclusion
Problematic Reality
Life is short and Not so sweet
Potential Remedies
Pretend everything is ok
Purge himself, try to make himself clean
Painful Realization
What is needed is something we don’t have
The only way was if God were a man, if there were a mediator
The Conclusion:
John 1:14, Philippians 2:6-7, 1 Timothy 2:5-6, Hebrews 4:16
