2 CONTRASTING FAMILIES
Hannah’s Prayer Life
1. She asked for a son (1 Samuel 1:11-16)
a. She kept on praying
b. She was praying in her heart
c. She was deeply troubled
d. She poured out her soul
e. She was in great anguish and grief
2. She left it in God’s hands (1:17-20)
a. Received the blessing from the priest
b. Ate something
c. No longer downcast
d. Worshiped
3. She was obedient (1:21-28)
a. Weaned her son
b. Brought him to the house of the Lord
c. Gave him to Eli to serve the Lord
4. She praised God for His gift (2:1-11)
a. She prayed again! (We often forget that part)
b. She rejoiced
c. She adored God for who He was to her
d. She recognized God’s justice and sovereignty
Eli’s Priestly Life
1. His sons were wicked (2:12-17)
a. No regard for God
b. They took for themselves the offerings
c. They didn’t even wait for the fat to be burned
d. They were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt
e. They slept with women who served at the entrance
2. He ministered to Hannah and Elkanah (2:18-21)
a. He blessed them
b. He trained Samuel
3. He rebuked his sons, but enough? (2:22-26)
a. He asked them why
b. He told them not to
c. He reasoned with them
4. His family was prophesied against (2:27-36)
a. They had been chosen
b. He honored his sons more than God
c. His family would lose the priesthood
d. His descendants will die in their prime
e. A faithful priest will be raised up
f. His descendants will beg
