Lamentations 3
Introduction
1. Acrostic of Hebrew Alphabet
2. 66 verses b/c each letter is done thrice
3. More personal than first 2 chapters
Why did Jeremiah suffer so much considering the fact that he was simiply being obedient?
1. Jeremiah 37:9 (his message rejected)
2. Jeremiah 37:16 (thrown in dungeon)
3. Jeremiah 37:21 (released)
4. Jeremiah 38:3-6 (cistern and mud)
PRINCIPLE- If you're going to reach people in a filthy world, you may very well get dirty
Jim Lo tells a story about a missionary in Africa who was sent the following requests by a soon coming short term missions team:
1. Book rooms for us at holiday inn (AC, pool, tv's, american food)
2. Rent bus for us (AC, padded seats)
3. Locate stores for us (souvenirs)
4. Arrange a trip to the wild game reserve for us
*We wish to avoid...
1. Manual labor (many on our team are retired)
2. Long worship services (we're not used to it)
3. Churches without chairs
Is this a short term missions trip or a vacation? As ministers, we are not on vacation. We are on a mission. We must be willing to suffer and pay any price in order to obey.
1-20 Jeremiah's suffering
Felt AFFLICTED by God (1, 5, 14-20)
Felt ABANDONED by God (2, 6)
Felt ATTACKED by God (3, 10-13)
Felt AGED by God (4)
Felt ANCHORED DOWN by God (7, 9)
Felt un ANSWERED by God (8)
We can be honest about our feelings. God already knows our feelings anyways. He appreciates open communication.
21-39 Jeremiah's Hope
His hope was based on God's...
1. Love
2. Compassion
3. Faithfulness
4. Provision
5. Goodness
6. Mission
7. Knowledge
8. Justice
9. Sovereignty
40-42 Jeremiah's Chronology
For most people, they think 1) God punishes so 2) we will sin
But in reality the order is reversed to 1) We sin so 2) God punishes
43-47 Jeremiah thinks for Israel
1. God is pursuing us (negatively by our standards!)
2. God won't answer us
3. God won't protect us
48-51 Jeremiah grieves for Israel
52-66 Jeremiah sees justice coming
1. God finally heard him (55)
2. God finally came (57)
3. God finally fought for him (58)
4. God finally will bring justice (59-66)
God will right all wrong, but we may be stuck in the mud for a while (Jeremiah was physically stuck in the mud, Jeremiah 38:3-6).
