Colossians 3:11-4:1
Here there is...
Where? (Raised with Christ, 3:1+11)
--Out of the miry clay
--On Christ the solid rock
--On the great mountain
From the Epistle to Diognetus:
Christians are not distinguished from the rest of humanity by country, language or custom. (They) follow the local customs in dress and food and other aspects of life...they live in their own countries, but only as aliens, they participate in everything as citizens, and endure everything as foreigners. Every foreign country is their fatherland, and every fatherland is foreign In a word, what the soul is to the body, Christians are to the world The soul dwells in the body, but is not of the body; Likewise Christians dwell in the world, but are not of the world...The soul is enclosed in the body, but it holds the body together; and though Christians are detained in the world as if in a prison, they in fact hold the world together
When Biblical principles are applied...
Greek Christians aren't opposed to Jewish Christians
Jewish Christians aren't opposed to Greek Christians
And the same pattern applies to circumcised, uncircumcised, barbarian, scythian, slave & free Christians. These are unified in Jesus, there is no hostility (Ephesians 2:14)
The world will always be at war
But the church should always be at peace
How can we be at peace???
By taking of the old (as in Colossians 3:1-10)
And putting on the new (as in this passage)
1. Compassion
2. Kindness
3. Humility
4. Gentleness
5. Patience
6. Bearing with each other (not being easily offended)
7. Forgiving each other
8. Love (love will lead to the above)
Jesus is the king of the new kingdom and He's called for a cease-fire (15)
Three Purposes of the Church are focused on here...
1. Fellowship, verse 15
2. Discipleship, verse 16
3. Worship (praise), verses 16-17
*Of Rick Warren's purposes, only ministry and evangelism are left out. Why? Perhaps because Paul is dealing with the internal environment of the church. If these 3 purposes are being met, perhaps the remaining 2 flow naturally.
Roles still exist, but without the friction of before
1. Wives- Submit
2. Husbands - Love
3. Children - Obey
4. Fathers - Don't embitter, discourage
5. Slaves - Obey at all times, fully
6. Masters - Provide for
The Father & Son are our model for these relationships
