2 Samuel 11-12
SOLOMON’S HERITAGE
*Heritage is important. Our past influences us, but does not control us (Ezekiel 18). Solomon had an extreme heritage and it influenced his extreme life.
The Idol of Idleness
In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israeli army…but David remained in Jerusalem.
1. A good WOMAN isn’t idle (Proverbs 31:27)
2. A good MAN isn’t idle (Ecc. 10:18, 11:6)
3. Idleness leads to BAD theology (Colossians 2:18)
4. Idleness leads to a multitude of SINS (1 Tim. 5:13)
5. The idle should be WARNED (1 Thes. 5:14)
6. The idle should be SHUNNED (2 thes. 3:6-7)
Marks of Real Repentance
I have sinned against the Lord
1. True Repentance calls sin SIN (2 Sam. 12:13)
2. True Repentance produces sacrifice (12:16-17)
3. True Repentance accepts consequences (12:18-20)
4. True Repentance MOVES ON (12:21-23)
5. True Repentance makes restitution (12:24)
6. True Repentance is blessed by God (12:25)
The Age of Accountability
I will go to him, but he will not return to me
1. All people of all ages are sinners (Psalm 51:5, 58:3, Romans 3:10)
2. Children don’t understand right/wrong (Deut. 1:39, Isaiah 7:16)
3. God doesn’t hold children responsible (Numbers 14, Proverbs 24:12)
So what is the 'age' of accountability
1. Some argue 13, the age one becomes an 'adult' in jewish culture
2. Some argue 20, since those 20 and over were punished for the sins in the desert
3. Some argue it is different for each individual
