Luke 14:1-14
Luke 14:1-14
A Seat at the Feast
A story about seats at a feast (14:1-11)
In 1st century Jewish culture, the least important guests arrived earliest and chose their seats, but if they chose too fine a seat (close to the host), they would later be moved back by the host to make room for more important guests
Observations from this story
1. Jesus was there early enough to observe people picking their seat
2. Jesus only told the story after he watched the people
3. The point Jesus was making was nothing new and was understood
Proverbs 25:6
Do not exalt yourself in the king's presence, and do not claim a place among great men; it is better for him to say to you, "Come up here,"
than for him to humiliate you before a nobleman.
1 Peter 5:6
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand,
that he may lift you up in due time.
Invite the Poor (14:12-14)
Matthew 5:46
If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?
Are not even the tax collectors doing that?
Observations from this lesson
1. The world uses a ‘you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” policy
2. Jesus called for a new approach
3. It is better, long term, to serve those who can’t return the favor
Who could you serve today that couldn't return the favor?
