Their Popular Proverb (18:1-2)
“The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge”
1. The exiles came from a wicked generation
2. The exiles blamed their predicament on their fathers
3. The exiles viewed themselves as innocent
??? What’s the difference b/w consequences & responsibility for sin?
??? Do we sometimes blame our ‘blood’ for our badness?
??? Is the reverse ever the case (‘goodness’ based on ‘blood’)?
The Proper Proverb (18:2-20)
“The soul who sins is the one who will die”
1. A righteous man will surely live
2. A violent man will surely die
3. Eternal life is not based on genetics
??? If we can’t pin the blame on them, who’s left to blame?
The Case of One Changing Course (18:21-29)
1. If a wicked man turns to righteousness, he will live
2. If a righteous man turns to wickedness, he will die
3. The exiles were in need of some serious course change
The Proper Course of Action (18:30-32)
1. Repent! (Turn away from all your offenses)
2. Live! (Get a new heart and a new spirit)
