The Moment You Die
WHAT DID THE ANCIENT WORLD BELIEVE?
Option A Disembodied and Dead
Option B Disembodied and Worse Off
Option C Disembodied, but Fairly Normal

WHY SOME BELIEVE IN ‘SOUL SLEEP’
1. They take the majority meaning of ‘soul’
2. They take the monist view of our makeup
3. They disagree with the translation ‘hell’
KEY PASSAGES
Enoch Genesis 5:24
Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
Elijah 2 Kings 2:11
As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
The Ghost of Samuel 1 Samuel 28:11
And he said, "Bring up Samuel for me."
David’s Departed Son 2 Samuel 12:23
I will go to him, but he will not return to me."
The Wisdom of Solomon Ecclesiastes 3:21
Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?"
Rich Man & Lazarus Luke 16:23
In hell, where he was in torment
The Transfiguration Matthew 17:3
Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Thief on the Cross Luke 23:43
Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
The Martyrs Revelation 20:4
I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded
My Conclusion:
I think the weight of the evidence favors consciousness for the righteous after death. The fate of the wicked upon death is, to me, a cloudier issue. The Old Testament doesn't speak of consciousness after death. The New Testament just hints at it within controversial passages.
