1 Timothy 6:1-10, 17-19
Instructions for Slaves
- Ties into previous section (honor due)
- Ties into next section (holiness)
* Slavery was very different then
- economic vs. racial
- temporary vs. permanent
- part time vs. full time
If earthly boss is unbeliever --> work hard
If earthly boss is believer --> work hard
Why is he even talking about slaves?
There may have been some teaching that Christians are 'free' and should seek 'wealth'
Descriptions of those teaching different than Paul
1. The avoid or re-interpret Jesus
2. They think they know much, elitist
3. Their doctrines produce the opposite of godliness
4. They are focused on earthly gain
Why be content?
1. Godliness is its own reward
2. We have no claim to worldly wealth
3. We can't take it with us
4. Discontentment leads to trouble
5. Even if we got rich, it carries baggage (arrogance, false hope)
6. We learn to enjoy the simple pleasures
7. We get more time to do good
8. We have more stuff to share
9. We store up treasures in heaven
