GRACE
Convicting Grace: God’s presence alerting us to our sin
6 Ways that God sends Conviction
1. Through the Holy Spirit
When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment (John 16:8)
2. Through holy people
So that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us (Titus 2:8)
3. Through kindness
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head (Proverbs 25:22)
4. Through confrontation
"You are the man!” (2 Samuel 12:7)
5. Through shunning
Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed (2 Thessalonians 3:14)
6. Through discipline
I have been disciplined…After I strayed, I repented; after I came to understand, I beat my breast. I was ashamed and humiliated (Jeremiah 31:18-19)
7 Ways We Deal with Sin
1. Cover It Up (1 Samuel 15:13)
“I have carried out the LORD's instructions”
2. Cast Blame (1 Samuel 15:15, 21, 24)
“The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites”
3. Compare It (1 Samuel 15:15)
“But we totally destroyed the rest”
4. Convince Yourself (1 Samuel 15:20)
“But I did obey the Lord”
5. Claim Pure Motives (1 Samuel 15:21)
“In order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God”
6. Change the Terms (Luke 10:25-29)
“And who is my neighbor?”
7. Confess & Repent (1 Samuel 15:24)
“I have sinned. I violated the LORD's command”
If we claim to be without sin,
we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins,
he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unrighteousness.
