Calm in the Storm (8:23-27)
The Gospel According to Matthew
Jesus for President (Part 29: Calm in the Storm)
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" 26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"
Life is filled with storms. Sometimes we see them coming and sometimes they come without warning.
We should recognize that Jesus was honest about this
We often feel abandoned. Sometimes it seems that God isn’t concerned about what we are going through.
We should resist the temptation to accuse Jesus
Some problems seem too big. Sometimes we honestly don’t think it’s possible to survive the storm.
We should enlarge of view of Jesus’ identity
Fear is a worthwhile emotion. Sometimes we need to make sure our fear is directed to the proper place.
We should fear the Lord, not the circumstances
Some problems seem too long. Sometimes we forget that the storms won’t last forever.
We should remember that Jesus will bring peace
