Jeremiah 23, 27-28, 46-49 (Submit to Babylon!)
The Weeping Prophet
Part 8: Submit to Babylon!
Against the Nations
Jeremiah was God’s prophet not only to his own people, but also to the surrounding nations. God’s wrath was about to come against the nations (25:17-26) of Egypt (46), Philistia (47), Moab (48), Ammon (49:1-6), Edom (49:7-22), Hazor (49:28-33), Elam (49:34-39), etc. But even amidst these judgments, God still had plans of restoration (46:26, 48:47, 49:6, 11, 39).
The Yoke of Babylon
The Babylonian Empire was going to be used as God’s tool for judgment. Jeremiah was told to illustrate the coming Babylonian rule by wearing a yoke around his neck (27:2). The proper response to this was to submit. Many Pagan prophets, however, were telling their leaders otherwise (27:9-11). A Jewish prophet named Hananiah was spreading the same lies in Judah (28:2-4). Jeremiah insisted on submission and God put Hananiah to death (28:16-17).
Lying Leaders
Religion is powerful (23:10) and that makes it very dangerous (23:14-15). In Jeremiah’s day, prophets were prophesying lies in the Lord’s name (23:16-17). God considered it a very serious crime to claim His backing to statements that He didn’t actually inspire (23:31, 36).
