Tradition vs. Transformation (15:1-20)
The Gospel According to Matthew
Jesus for President (Part 43: Tradition vs. Transformation)
Why do you break the command of God
for the sake of your tradition?
1. Many times, the habits of religious people don’t necessarily come from God, but are products of people. This doesn’t mean that they are evil, but it does mean they shouldn’t be elevated to equal standing with the Scriptures (Matt 15:1-2).
Traditions: Sunday, order of worship, buildings, pews, type of music, 'pastor'
Same things happened in Judaism through rabbis and pharisees
Creatures of habit (Calf Path by Sam Walter Foss)
2. Sometimes these ‘traditions’ become more important to religious people than the sacred texts/divine commands! When this happens, religion has become a matter of external superficialities rather than internal transformation (Matt 15:3-11, 15-20).
End up breaking commands to keep traditions
Ends up being lip service to God
3. Pointing out the superiority of transformation over mere tradition ruffles feathers, but is a necessary action if God’s people are to remain God’s people (Matt 15:12-14).
The Message isn't always popular
True Christianity is a matter of heart

Matthew 15:1-20
Jesus simply meant that eating (clean food) with unwashed hands does not make a man unclean (at heart) but what comes out his mouth does because mouth expresses the content of one’s heart.
