The Gospel According to Matthew
Jesus for President (Part 50: Tax Questions)
Jesus & the Temple Tax
Based on Exodus 30:11-16, the Temple Tax in Jesus’ day seems to have become a small voluntary donation made to maintain the Temple in Jerusalem.
1. The Temple (and buildings in general) was of decreasing importance
2. We need to think things through with a Kingdom perspective
3. Having a Kingdom perspective does not give us the right to needlessly offend others
Jesus & the Roman Tax
As a conquered people, the Jews had to pay tribute to their conquerors, the Romans. This tax was a volatile issue for zealous Jews.
1. Being a citizen of the Kingdom does not mean that we cease to be part of the world
2. Since the coin in question bore the image and inscription of Caesar, it belonged to Caesar
3. Since human beings are made in the image of God, they belong to God
