1. Became prosperous when Augustus Caesar made it the capital of western Asia Minor in 27BC. Its peak was the 1st and 2nd Centuries AD.
2. The population of Ephesus was roughly 250,000 in Paul’s day (3rd largest in Roman Empire). It also had a very large Jewish population.
3. Location of the famous Temple of Artemis/Diana, one of the ancient wonders of the world, measuring 425x225 with 127 65ft columns
4. Contained a massive theatre (holding 25k)
5. It was the ‘magic’ capital of Asia minor
Christianity in Ephesus (7 Significant Events)
1. Some Jews from Ephesus were possibly present in Jerusalem at Pentecost in AD30 (Acts 2)
2. During the 2nd missionary journey (Acts 15:36-18:22), Paul stopped at the synagogue in Ephesus. Priscila & Aquila remained in Ephesus (AD 50)
3. Apollos came to Ephesus and spoke boldly in the synagogue. Priscilla & Aquila taught him the way of God more adequately (Acts 18:24-26).
4. Paul stayed in Ephesus for about 3 years (Acts 20:31, AD53-56) during the 3rd missionary journey (Acts 18:23-21:16). He bid them farewell (20:25).
5. Paul writes Ephesians (around AD60) from prison.
