The Sign of the Remnant (9-12)
“Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me.
We are signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD Almighty”
(Isaiah 8:18)
The Situation
Even with the defeat of the alliance between Israel and Aram, the people of Judah must have wondered if there was any ultimate hope given the strength of the Assyrian Empire. Isaiah’s other son’s name was a sign to God’s people that they did indeed have a future in God’s plan.
The Child
Name: Shear-Jashub
Meaning: A Remnant will Return
Message: God has a plan starting in Galilee (9:1-2)
God will enlarge His nation again (9:3-5)
God will establish His divine kingdom (9:6-7)
God will cut off wicked Israelites (9:8-10:4)
God will judge prideful Gentiles (10:5-19)
God will be faithful to the Remnant (10:20-23)
God will protect His people (10:24-34)
God will provide a descendant of Jesse (11:1)
He will attract the nations (11:2-10)
He will attract the remnant (11:11-16)
He will inspire praise (12:1-6)
The NT Usage
The NT writers consistently apply these prophecies to the 1st Coming of Jesus. Jesus established His Kingdom (9:7) made up of the Remnant of Israel (10:20-22) and a number of Gentiles (11:6-10). Together, these believers would constitute God’s true people (12:4-6).
