A Not So Final Farewell
The
Final Command (13:31-35)
Once
Judas had left the room, Jesus declared that the time had come for His
greatness to be displayed (and since He and the Father are one, the Father’s
greatness as well). This greatness would be displayed, strangely enough from
the worldly perspective, by the cross.
Since
Jesus would be dying and, subsequently, leaving the disciples, He left them
with one final and simple command. They were to love one another as He had
loved them. It is by this love that true Christians are to be identified.
A Prediction for Peter (13:36-38)
Rather
than focus on the command, Peter wanted to know more about the departure.
Perhaps assuming that Jesus was about to conduct some covert plan for power,
Peter insisted that he wanted to be in on it and was even willing to die for
Jesus. But Peter, still, misunderstood the nature of Christ’s Kingdom. He
needed to be transformed by the cross and filled with the Spirit.
What accomplishes all this ‘glory’ in 13:31-32?
Was the command to ‘love one another’ really new?
How
do we typically identify Christians today?
