The Arrest
4TH and 1
The Arrest
Jesus Arrested (18:1-11)
When
Jesus had finished praying (after the Farewell Discourse), He took the
disciples to an olive grove (Gethsemane) just inside the city limits. The
setting provided an ideal opportunity for Judas to carry out his betrayal.
The
4th Gospel tells us that both Roman and Jewish authorities were part
of the arresting party (they seem to have expected a fight), but Jesus
stunningly gave Himself up while seeking to secure the safety of His followers.
Simon-Peter,
however, drew a dagger in defense of Jesus and cut off the ear of a servant
named Malchus. Jesus rebuked Simon-Peter, commanding him to put his weapon away
and allow Jesus to fulfill His mission.
Jesus Taken to Annas
(18:12-14)
Jesus
was arrested, bound, and taken to Annas. Annas had been the High Priest from
AD6 to AD15 before Pilate’s predecessor deposed him, but he continued to hold
enormous influence at the time of Jesus’ ministry.
Peter’s First Denial
(18:15-18)
Meanwhile,
Simon-Peter and another disciple (probably the author of the 4th
Gospel) continued to follow Jesus. The other disciple got permission for
Simon-Peter to enter the courtyard where he was questioned in regards to his
connection to Jesus. Peter denied the relationship.
The Questioning Before Annas
(18:19-24)
Annas
wanted to question Jesus about His disciples and His teaching. But Jesus
refused comment on the former (perhaps to protect them) and remarked that the
latter was already a matter of public record (this may have been his way of
objecting to the fact that standard procedures were not being practiced).
Jesus’
response was interpreted as a sign of disrespect for Annas by one of the
officials who proceeded to strike Jesus. Jesus’ insistence on the injustice of
the situation prompted His transfer to Caiaphas (the official High Priest).
Peter’s Second & Third
Denial (18:25-27)
Again
the author switches the scene back to Simon-Peter being warmed by the fire in
the courtyard. After a second denial of Jesus, a relative of Malchus questioned
him and Simon-Peter denied Jesus a third time (thus fulfilling Jesus’
prediction in 13:38).
