The Death and Life of Lazarus

The Death & Life of Lazarus
Jesus
Surprisingly Stays (11:1-6)
Luke 10:38-42 briefly tells of sisters (Martha
& Mary) who served & listened to Jesus, but it is in John 11-12 that we
learn the most about them and their brother Lazarus. When they sent word that
Lazarus was sick, Jesus delayed coming to Bethany for 2 days.
Why are we told of
anointing before it happens?
Why did Jesus’ delay
in coming to help Lazarus?
Jesus
Surprisingly Goes (11:7-16)
Bethany was only about 2 miles from Jerusalem
where the authorities had recently attempted to stone Jesus. The disciples are,
therefore, shocked when He explains that His work must take them back to that
area, but they courageously go… assuming their own deaths.
Why
did Jesus speak of death as ‘sleep’?
Jesus
& Martha (11:17-27)
In her grief, Martha conveys regret that Jesus
had not arrived sooner. Her faith, however, had not dwindled. She gave a model
confession (see 20:31).
What
is the meaning of this I AM statement?
Jesus
& Mary (11:28-37)
Mary, too, is a believer, but communicates
disappointment with Jesus’ tardiness. Jesus’ response to the mourning (of Mary
and the others) is indignation. He wept on the way to the tomb.
Why
did the Jews follow Mary out of the house?
What
was Jesus indignant about?
What
is the answer to the question in v. 37?
Jesus
& Lazarus (11:38-44)
After ordering the removal of the tombstone,
Jesus audibly thanked His Father. Jesus then commanded Lazarus to come out of
the tomb (which he did!) and ordered the people to unwrap him. This is the 7th
and final sign in the pre-passion portion of the 4th Gospel.
Why
the emphasis on 4 days (vs. 17 & 39)?
Is
it ‘If you believe’ or ‘So that you may believe’?
What
was the purpose of this & the other signs?
Is
there significance to the grave clothes?
What
ever happened to Lazarus?
