-Part 4-
#5 Honor your father and your mother
Old Testament Observations
1. This is the transitional commandment (from love God to love people)
2. This is the only completely positive commandment
3. This is an oft-quoted commandment in the N.T. (6 times)
4. This is the 1st command with a promise attached (Ephesians 6:1-2)
5. This command, if disobeyed, resulted in death (Exodus 21:15, 17, Leviticus 20:9)
How do we Honor our Parents?
1. Submit to their authority (Genesis 22, Jeremiah 35, Ephesians 6:1, Luke 14:26)
2. Showing gratitude for their sacrifices
3. Speaking/Acting respectively toward them (Proverbs 31:28)
4. Living wisely and righteously (Proverbs 15:20)
5. Repay your debt of love (Genesis 47:11, John 19:26-27, 1 Timothy 5:2-8, Matthew 15:2-6)
We need to honor 3 levels of parents in the above ways
LEVEL 1: PHYSICAL PARENTS
Who is your earthly father?
Who is your earthly mother?
LEVEL 2: SPIRITUAL PARENTS (1 Timothy 5:1-2, Galatians 4:19, 1 Thessalonians 2:7)
Who is your spiritual father?
Who is your spiritual mother?
LEVEL 3: HEAVENLY PARENTS
Who is your heavenly Father? (Malachi 1:6, John 5:22-23)
Who is your heavenly mother? (Galatians 4:26, Revelation 21:2, 9-10)
